Day 35 – Safford to Globe

Anthem of the day:

Started my day right with a breakfast burrito from the 24/7 Mexican place next door.

There’s a Walmart in town so I decided to stop by to restock and do some repairs. I grabbed some new tubes and a new tire. I don’t know what I did to my Schwalbe but it was on its last legs. A little disappointing since they’re supposed to last like 3000 miles but hey this journey hasn’t necessarily had the most favorable conditions. Hopefully this Walmart brand tire will hold until I hit the Pacific.

Headed to Globe today which is about an 80 mile ride from Safford where I was. On the way I bumped into Benjamin who’s walking to raise awareness about animal cruelty. Check out his Instagram:

The rest of the ride was pretty brutal. Some strong headwinds made for rough riding and kicked up a lot of dust.

I ended my ride around 8:30, I’m sure other people have described it but when you have only one objective you get into a kind of trance state and just keep pedaling until you’re where you need to be. Pedaling through the dark and the exhaustion is a pretty tough experience in the moment. Especially because you know you have no other options. Even if the wind is blasting you in the face there’s just really no other direction you can go.

Anyways, I ended my night at a Motel 6 in Globe where the very generous owner shot the breeze with me for a while and gave me some goodies to help replenish my weary bones.
